We Love you Nick! Thanks for being our coolest angel!
Most of you know the story... On Jan 1 of 2012, my best friend Cheryl and her awesome husband Nick were snowboarding. That was the first day Nick said he was having a 'weird' headache. Their daughter Kennedy turned 1 on Jan 11 and at her birthday party he was still complaining of the headaches. The HA continued and he saw some docs about it but because he wasn't having any neurological deficits, no one thought anything of it. While at work on Feb 8, 2012 (about a month into the HAs) he had a focal seizure which then bought him an MRI the next day, February 9. He was home for about 20 minutes from that appt and they got a call to go back to the hospital. This wad when they found out the bad news. He was diagnosed with Anaplastic Ependymoma- Malignant Brain Cancer.
He had two surgeries February 23 and 26. After the two week hospital stay and surgery recovery, he started his 6 weeks of radiation treatment that was completed in the beginning of May. He then did some rehab and returned to work in November of 2012 after a full recovery.
Nick had a recurrence in April of 2015 which was treated with gamma knife. That surgery went well and they had great hope until his last image on January 19 2016. After speaking with the surgeons they had to face the hard truth that surgical resection was no longer an option.
In the winter of 2017, almost 5 years to the day of his first MRI, Nick became the coolest angel in heaven. If you knew Nick and know his beautiful family, Cheryl, Kennedy, and Caleb, I am sure you have been touched by them in some way- it’s impossible not to love them. Each year, this run is just one thing I can do to honor them.
I'll always love you Nick, and I miss your hilarious texts every day.
This has given me a new outlook on life and I want to give back. We are all guilty of thinking we are invincible... that things like this won't affect our inner circle. When they do, they hit hard. Very hard. This team is in honor of Nick.
