I'm facing my fears for a cause so close to my heart
Welcome to my fundraising page. I’ve committed to raise funds to benefit cutting-edge brain cancer research through Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure (ABC2) by rappelling down the side of a building! On December 9, I will rappel down the Manchester Grand Hyatt, the largest building on the San Diego waterfront. (Don't worry, Michael will be going down right next to me). All the money raised for this event will be channeled to San Diego-based research projects, such as those taking place at UCSD, to fight this ugly disease.
I have too long of a history with cancer in my family: both of my grandmothers suffered from cancer, as well as my mother and grandfather.
My mom is on her 4th battle, already having battled Leukemia and breast cancer. The courage of a wonderful (then) stranger in Louisiana, coupled with highly intelligent, hardworking physicians (including my dad) made my mom's recovery from Leukemia possible. She will continue to fight the latest breast cancer diagnosis, but I am confident that she's got this! I know it takes a village though.
I, too, am currently in the middle of my own journey to keep cancer from taking me away from my children. As I go through medical procedures to deal with my results from genetic testing, this seems like the right time to put my energies into helping others through their cancer battles.
It is my Nonno, LOUIS BRUTOCAO, for whom I want to dedicate this endeavor. Many of you remember him for the wonderfully kind-hearted and generous man that he was. Then a brain tumor got to him. I watched him fight a great fight; but ultimately glioblastoma multiforme took his life. I want to conquer my own fears - of heights & of cancer - in honor of him.
There are almost 700,000 people living with brain tumors and about 80,000 more will receive a primary brain tumor diagnosis this year. Despite the frequent occurance of brain tumors, and their devastating prognosis, there have only been four (4) FDA approved drugs to treat brain tumors in the past 30 years. More research is desperately needed. I want to be a part of the solution.
Please be a part of my village. I have a large goal to reach, and I genuinely apprecaite your support (every $5 counts!) for this cause so close to my heart.
